A selection of land Rover’s doing what Land Rover do best…..getting down and dirty and a touch wet!!

Fancy giving it a go?? Clearly the first step is to ensure your own safety by understanding what you are doing and where you are going….how deep is that water you are about to drop the front end of your pride and joy into? What if you get stuck…is some one else there help you…..have you got the right gear to winch you out etc etc. It all sounds a little boring but ensuring the safely of the driver and any passengers is paramount followed closely by the cost of repairs should it all go wrong!

A rough guide to wading depths is about 20″ but with no two Land Rovers the same these days….well almost…with the list of modifications your wading depth my well be different. So be safe… if you are playing around in water you will need a snorkel and a wading kit as a bare minimum. Just an egg cup full of water down the air intake is enough to end proceedings for the day as it will “hydraulic” the engine! In very simple terms the engine is compressing the air/fuel mixture on every stroke….however the laws of physics clearly state you can’t compress a liquid….so when the water gets in the piston try’s to compress the water and something has got to give. Normally this results in a bent con rod at least or worst a smashed block as it throws a leg out of bed! In the blink of an eye it will be all over….you will need recovering and face a lengthy and expensive repair.

What you need to do is raise the air intake to avoid water being drawn into the engine and the wading kit lifts the breathers from the timing cover, gearbox and axles to avoid water contamination of the lubricants.
Snorkels start from about £60 over on ebay and wading kits from about £35…again on ebay here
For sub 100 quid and a few hours to fit is it really worth taking the risk.

Be safe out there lads and enjoy yourself….as the slogan goes…one life live it….so do just that and don’t spend you time repairing an avoidable breakdown!
